SHAKESPEARE FOR THE NEW CENTURY!
Shakespeare at St Thomas More College.

ONE SHAKESPEAREAN PRODUCTION WILL BE STAGED EACH YEAR AT STMC. That is our committment.

The power and importance of Shakespeare within our heritage is inarguable. However so many students today find the language a barrier to their understanding of this "masterpiece" theatre. St Thomas More College: Program of Excellence in the Arts has undertaken a new committment to staging at least one production of a Shakespearen play every year. What we guarantee is that it will not be Shakespeare as you expect it.

It will be a challenge.
It will be an excitement.
It will be.
It will!

2009:
This year, whilst students will study Shakespeare in class, there will be no production of a Shakespearean play. However the Senior Production, THE WHITE DEVIL, is a Jacobean play and was written in the era immediately following Shakespeare's theatre. As a result there are many similarities in style and form.

2008:
War of The Roses (Summer Studio)

Selected scenes from Shakespeare's History plays from Richard III to Henry V, interpreteted through physical theatre and contemporary Shakespeare performance practices. This project will be performed by the Year 9 and 10 Performance Company.

Romeo and Juliet (Year 8 Showcase)

Year 8 Drama students present Shakespeare's famous play about star crossed lovers in less than 40minutes. This project introduces students the theatrical and performance conventions.

2007:
A Midsummer Night's DreaM (College Production)

HOT SUMMER NIGHT! The place is MadForest - the uber club for the rich, the glamorous, the A crowd. In the heat and amidst the pulsing beat, the music of love takes over. We watch it play out.

2006:
Tempest! (Senior Production)

Through explorations of Shakespearean horror and tragedy The STMC Senior Drama Company offered a dark and telling interpretation of moments from Shakespeare's greatest tragedy's - King Lear, Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello, Titus Andronicus and The Tempest, interwoven to create a performance mozaic

2005:
R & J (Summer Studio)

In a world gone mad with jealousy and revenge, two young hearts meet and fall in love. Performed by the Year 10 Performance Company, the audience are introduced to Romeo and Juliet through the heat of the tumble dryer; short, hot and filled with energy. Expect R & J as told by text messaging, Romeo is a drug, Juliet is an addict. This is a love story filled with colour and movement - bold and fast. This will not be Romeo and Juliet for purists. This is Shakespeare for the new century.

In 2005, The Year 10 Performance Company also participated in the launch of the International Shakespeare Festival at Brisbane City Hall in November 2005 by performing elements of this production.
