Assistant Principal John Thomas Receives Excellence Award for Building Strong Catholic Identity

Assistant Principal Religious Education Mr John Thomas has been recognised for going “above and beyond” to teach, challenge and transform students’ lives at the annual Brisbane Catholic Education Excellence Awards gala evening.

Mr Thomas won the ‘ACU Award for Excellence in Building Strong Catholic Identity’ presented to him by the Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education Pam Betts and Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane Archbishop Mark Coleridge.

The event was held at the Brisbane Convention Centre where the nine outstanding winners from 120 nominations were recognised for supporting and nurturing students, and in teaching, leading, mentoring and developing others.

St Thomas More College, Sunnybank Acting Principal Karen Mulcahy congratulated Mr Thomas on the award and acknowledged him for his commitment to the religious life of the college: “As APRE for the past nine years, you've demonstrated in an authentic way, your personal commitment to your catholic faith, religious education and the religious life of our college.”

“Our students certainly receive a strong message that they belong to our college community.

“You've worked in leadership locally, within the state and nationally. Your mentorship of young teachers over the years has been invaluable to building our profession,” said Ms Mulcahy in the video below.

On receiving the award, Mr Thomas humbly shared: “I attended the evening with no expectation that I would "win" the award; for me, it was enough that I was nominated.”

“I stood by the steps of the stage and the MC read out the reasons I had won - my work "flashed" before my eyes as I listened to what people had noticed about what I try to do.

“This was a very humbling moment.

“Of course, whilst I am the recipient, it is an acknowledgement of the wonderful work that happens in this space at St Thomas More College with the many staff who work tirelessly and behind the scenes to ensure St Thomas More College is a Catholic School.
“My humble thanks to the many staff who have got on board with what we have been trying to do to challenge our young people to be the best that they can,” Mr Thomas said.

Further Ms Mulcahy said Mr Thomas lives out the college motto of God’s Servant First: “You truly embody our college motto as you live out on a daily basis, what it means to be God's servant first.”

“Whether in the classroom, amongst your colleagues, on the confraternity field, in the chapel, or at the many barbecues you cook to raise funds for a variety of good causes, you have certainly been God's servant first.

“Thank you for all that you do,” Ms Mulcahy said.
